The Municipality of Maastricht is a governmental institution and delivers services for the town of Maastricht. It also has an organisational cluster dedicated to cultural heritage: monuments, architectural history, historical landscapes, archaeology and history. The institution does not do scientific research, but applies their knowledge to spatial developments issues and gives historical input into projects and municipal programms.

The municipality also maintains an archaeological and cultural heritage depot and has a presentation/exposition function (Centre Céramique).
