3D Digital Storytelling Workshop at Smithsonian Institute

In June 2024, PURE3D Team Members, Susan Schreibman and Kelly Gillikin Schoueri, conducted a two-day 3D Digital Storytelling workshop at the Smithsonian Institute, bringing together curators and educators from across the Smithsonian’s diverse museums, including the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of the American Latino, the National Portrait Gallery, and more. The workshop focused on teaching participants the technical and conceptual workflows needed to create engaging narratives using the Smithsonian Digitization Program Office’s 3D Viewing Platform, Voyager Explorer. The goal of the workshop was to re-think what digital curation means when using 3D models of the museum’s vast collections. The Voyager Platform has a lot of unique features but it can be conceptually challenging to understand how to best use these features to create interesting and unique stories. Through a series of Design Thinking activities, workshop participants engaged critically with their chosen museum object by contextualizing the object within wider historical moments and societal themes.
