Publication Process

All submissions are first reviewed by the editorial board to determine whether it meets PURE3D’s  basic criteria for consideration (see submission guidelines). Proposals which meet this criteria can begin implementing their 3D scholarly editions within the PURE3D infrastructure.

Due to the nature of 3D scholarship, we offer the opportunity for authors to have a draft version of their editions evaluated before finalization. Once authors are ready for this round of review, they should submit their edition in the Open Journal System. Two peer-reviewers will be appointed and will complete a single-blind evaluation of your edition. They will review it based on the criteria of value and user experience, including:

  • the 3D model is at the center of the intended argument or narrative
  • there is complete documentation on the technical creation of the 3D model
  • textual and other multimodal content is appropriate and is effective in contextualizing the 3D
  • the platform’s technical affordances are used in an coherent and engaging way

We also offer the possibility to work with collaborators, meaning authors can receive additional support and guidance from reviewers who are topic experts. The goal here is to offer collaborative opportunities for our community. Both the reviewer and the author will have to agree to this collaboration, after which they can work together openly towards strengthening the final edition. The time investment required for this will depend on the author’s vision for the project and how much further work is required. The reviewer will receive credit for their involvement as a project collaborator, and a new reviewer will be appointed for the final review.

You will receive your feedback from the editorial board once the first round of peer reviews is complete. You will then have a chance to implement changes, finalize your edition, and respond in writing to the editors. Should major revisions be required, you may resubmit your alpha version; however, if only minor revisions are suggested, you may continue with your edition implementation. The second round of review will take place once your edition is complete. Positive reviews will be openly published alongside your edition in the PURE3D infrastructure.

For inspiration while implementing your edition, we welcome you to view previous editions (coming soon). We also have a set of tutorials for you to follow to get acquainted with the Voyager Story and Voyager Explorer platforms (coming soon), and a FAQ/troubleshooting page. Authors will be provided with support by the PURE3D team for any technical obstacles they may encounter or to discuss conceptual approaches.
